Wind in Their Sails: Death and Resurrection

This is a story grounded deep in my past. In 1954, when I was 8 years old, my family came to San Francisco for a vacation.

My mom, being a resourceful woman, thought that taking me to see the tall ship Balclutha would be something I might enjoy.

She was right!

Walking up to Balclutha, I was mesmerized by the tall masts and yardarms. I visualized going up the ratlines to break out the sails.

That day still stands out in my mind when I think about how that chance encounter changed my perception of sailing ships.

Over the last 40 years I’ve made by living shooting video of sailboats of all kinds from America’s Cup racers to 16 foot dinghies. All that time I’ve found ways to incorporate classic sailboats into many of my projects.

There is an allure there that I just can’t escape.

So why now? Every year we see a classic sailboat or two or three die. We are losing treasures that when they are gone will leave nothing but memories in their wake.

Wind in Their Sails: Death and Resurrection is my effort to keep these boats active and alive. If I can save just one boat, I will feel like this effort has been worth it.
